Folded Map

Mixed Media: (Acrylic Paint; Colored Pencil; Wood Shavings; Sawdust; Dryer Lint) on Hinged Masonite

““Folded Map” has been evolving for many years. At one point it was exhibited with no color, only texture. I later decided that it needed color, and decided that the color should appear to blend from one side to the other, as though it was in transition.

It’s primarily got deep, cool colors, with warm colored highlights in the background on the inner part of the fold, with cool-colored ‘water’ flowing through it. On the outer part of the fold, the background is still primarily cool, but the ‘water' (‘lava’?) is done in warm colors.

At one point I was dissatisfied with the colors of the ‘water’, and erased all of it, eventually replacing it. I may still make adjustments to the background colors, but haven’t decided for sure yet. There are areas where the colored pencil isn’t reaching into the background, so I will have to extend those areas and then adjust the paint. I’m still deciding.
